Logic Makes Plans. Imagination Changes the Game. (And Leaders Who Confuse the Two Miss Out)

Too often, we treat “thinking” and “creativity” as if they’re interchangeable. They’re not. And when we blur the lines, we unintentionally limit what’s possible. In fact, the difference between them can shape whether a company simply treads water or actually takes off.

Thinking Has Its Place

Thinking is important of course. It’s how we evaluate, analyze, consider, and make decisions. It leans on logic, knowledge, and the patterns we already know. Thinking keeps things organized, keeps risk in check, and ensures that an idea can actually work.

Yes, that matters, however it isn’t enough. If a leader relies hevily on thinking, the best they can do is rearrange the furniture in the same room.

Creativity is what builds new rooms entirely. New wallpaper! It's takes walls down, it opens up the ceiling! It’s curiosity, imagination, and openness to the unexpected. It’s what allows leaders to see opportunities that others miss and to reframe constraints into possibilities.

Albert Einstein summed it up perfectly, as usual: “Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.”

Creativity isn’t a “nice-to-have” quality. It’s a core driver of growth, adaptability, and long-term success. In fact, a global IBM study of 1,500 CEOs found that creativity was ranked as the #1 leadership competency needed to navigate complexity and change -- above integrity, global thinking, or even management discipline. That's right: CREATIVITY.

Why? Because business isn’t about simply executing known formulas. Technology shifts overnight. Customer expectations evolve constantly. Competition can appear out of nowhere. In that environment, efficiency alone doesn’t win. The edge comes from the ability to generate new solutions, adapt quickly, reimagine what’s possible and question everything from a new perspective.
